Late Thursday night we arrived to Louisville airport. Jude was sound asleep on plane, it was 2:00 a.m. Uganda time. We had to wake him up, which he was less than thrilled about. We managed to get him calmed down shortly after walking off the plane.<br />

We were so excited to see many of our friends and family there waiting on us...but who I couldn't wait to see was my Trust! My emotions overcame me when I saw him...I think he was pretty happy to see me too!<br />

Chapel picked toast, samosas, and chipati with egg rolled up. We came back from breakfast and started packing! Yay! I can't explain how <span class="st">relieved I felt fi</span>lling up our suitcases!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Shortly after breakfast a lady came over to braid Chapel's hair. She said it would take about 4 hours, so Chapel got comfortable. She brought her 1 month baby. Like all babies here, he was wearing a winter hat, long sleeves, socks and wrapped in 2 blankets. She kept him completely covered most of the time...I was afraid he would die from heat stroke! Andrew came in and sat on opposite end of the couch. He nearly sat on the baby! Had no idea it was there!<br />

Shew! It was a long stressful, happy day! So thankful for everyone's prayers today! <br />
We can't wait to get our visa Wednesday and get home to our other boy!! Andrew & Brittaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11915159356671835133noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3170896198469455861.post-44112302216657323492014-10-24T10:19:00.000-07:002014-10-24T10:22:31.392-07:00If you're happy and you know it!Things were slow this week. We were waiting on Jude's medical appointment information to be sent to the Embassy and for the Embassy to call us to set up an appointment. We are used to waiting, but we have found when you are closer to going home, everyday counts. When you have nothing on your schedule to do it makes the days longer and when the electric goes out for hours at a time during the day it makes them even longer. After a week of calling and emailing the medical office without a response, Andrew decided to go to the office to see if he could get some information. After being told several different things about the status of our paperwork, he found out it had been sent and received by the Embassy on Wednesday...but under the wrong name. The lady he was speaking to very casually said the Embassy would figure it out. Thanks to Andrew's persistence, she called the Embassy, and before he left we had an appointment for Monday morning!<br />
<br />
So, Monday, we will drop off all our paperwork to the Embassy. Hopefully everything will be correct and hopefully we will have everything we need. We could possibly be scheduled that same day for an exit interview or we could be scheduled later in the week. Jude's biological mom has to travel 8 hours on a bus to come to the Embassy to sign a release form, so I'm thinking our exit interview may have to be scheduled later in the week.<br />
<br />
Yay! We are so happy things are moving forward! Please pray things would go smoothly next week. If so, we may be home next weekend!!<br />
<br />
I took Jude out for a little photo session this evening...I caught this one while we were singing "If you're happy and you know it..." <br />

Yesterday, while out eating lunch, we ran into the basketball coach of the International School. He invited us to stay at his house while he was gone for a few nights. We had been out at his house for dinner so we knew how beautiful it was and how much space we would have, plus they have a washer! Our day involved watching t.v. (the only t.v. we have at The Lodge is in the lobby), playing ‘Sorry’ outside on the balcony, making lunch and hanging laundry.<br />

Their house maid came to clean and made us homemade pizza for dinner! Since they have a oven, I couldn’t resist buying some stuff to bake a cake! I found a strawberry cake mix and cream cheese and baked a strawberry cake with cream cheese icing. It wasn’t Duncan Hines, but it was pretty good.<br />

Chapel had to teach Jude how to lick the mixer beater. He loved it until the dog came around…let’s just say he’s scared. Actually he's terrified. This dog hardly moves…it’s old…real old. Oh…what will we do when we get home and he sees crazy Charlie?! <br />

We haven't heard anything about our process today. Hoping to hear something tomorrow so we can keep moving forward! In the meantime, we have one more night here to enjoy this beautiful sunset. </div>

<li> The Pastor of Watoto took us to one of their three Children's Villages. They have created a community where they take orphans and care for them, give them different opportunities to go to school or learn a trade and have a home. Each home has 'mom', a lady who is widowed, lives and takes care of a maximum of 8 children. It was amazing to see. It sits on the side of a mountain and is beautiful.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So, now we are waiting for the doctor to send paperwork to the Embassy. We have been told this should take 5-7 business days. Once the Embassy receives it they will contact us for an appointment to drop off paperwork. Once we drop off paperwork we will set up another appointment for an exit interview! We know of some hurdles we have to get through before the exit interview, so please continue praying! </div>

Andrew heard me share with Chapel where some of her friends were vacationing this week and he replied, "How cool is it that you got to spend your fall break in Africa?!" My thoughts hadn't been "how cool it is to be in Africa", but "how can I get out of Africa and get home". So it made me think. I realized we are in Africa! Sometimes I forget! I can get so focused on being home that I forget we are basically spending a very long 'fall break' in Africa. My perspective changed and I chose to spend today like I would if we were on a vacation for fall break, because really, we are on vacation. No work, warm weather and palm trees! I noticed today there were palm trees. Today we went up to the International School where Andrew played basketball and the kids and I swam. I chose not to view it as a way to pass time, but to really enjoy my time. It's sad to think I could be on top of a mountain, at a beautiful pool overlooking the city and have to consciously make a choice to enjoy it. Sad and embarrassing, but true. <br />

After swimming and playing on the playground we took a short walk up to Quality to grab some snacks before heading back to The Lodge. Jude Daniel often rides on my back for shorter walks (it's the popular thing to do here). He must have been exhausted because he fell asleep and stayed asleep even after we got to Quality...the problem was his head kept sliding down resulting in this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRmYsqQ2Me5H_VJlReB4ZAq-MEwBJxlgo-pjXuOPswxCoOFAc3fKOIE2KbKQcOmnzZo3KIUo0osApB1H8Zbz-tmt4x6rv-F6ugvWOw6qDItjbMgBlQ76mad9UJRuYvbVBTf5AQ71SPlRM6/s1600/20141011_130307.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRmYsqQ2Me5H_VJlReB4ZAq-MEwBJxlgo-pjXuOPswxCoOFAc3fKOIE2KbKQcOmnzZo3KIUo0osApB1H8Zbz-tmt4x6rv-F6ugvWOw6qDItjbMgBlQ76mad9UJRuYvbVBTf5AQ71SPlRM6/s1600/20141011_130307.jpg" height="640" width="360" /></a></div>
Once back 'home' we had a little to eat, took naps, then got ready to go to dinner. We were invited to eat at the home of the International School's basketball coach. He lives on the same side of town as us, so it was a quick and easy drive. The Newsome's joined us along with 2 other families who were from DC, South Africa and the coach is from Wisconsin. Dinner was amazing! Steak, chicken, fish, mashed potatoes, veggies, homemade chocolate chip cookies and ice cream! We ate outside on the porch looking at a beautiful sunset, then a sky full of stars. We even had a camp fire and the kids roasted marshmallows! It was wonderful! I felt like we were sitting in someone's backyard in the states. <br />
<br />
Had our day ended there, it would have been a great day, but it didn't! My dad's family was all together for a family breakfast at my grandparent's house. Everyone was there which is pretty unusual, even my dad who lives in Georgia. So we got to facetime them ALL! I hadn't talked to my grandparents or my dad since being here, so it was so nice to get to see their faces and talk to them. Seeing everyone and introducing Jude to all of them was the perfect ending to a great day!<br />
<br />
I'm sure today would've been a good day no matter what, but I think it ended up being an amazing day because I chose to change my perspective. Again we sat under a tent on a wooden bench and waited, except today didn't feel like fall. Today was HOT! So we waited until we were told to move across the parking lot to another building. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgytweudJA__U9ZtchNOrpwGW1l2ugTs6QIosCgxv1-UNnWEKI0SnuvuLyYX3zz7XoXGHh6QrbGVkbAN1VHJzvalPWitXiWWxhpZpzbqbsIafWEIPMnYP1VD9T_otK0owF0Tb59XgBWc_25/s1600/photo(5)a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgytweudJA__U9ZtchNOrpwGW1l2ugTs6QIosCgxv1-UNnWEKI0SnuvuLyYX3zz7XoXGHh6QrbGVkbAN1VHJzvalPWitXiWWxhpZpzbqbsIafWEIPMnYP1VD9T_otK0owF0Tb59XgBWc_25/s1600/photo(5)a.jpg" height="342" width="400" /></a></div>
Soon after walking up they called Jude's name. We got next to the man who called it, telling him that was us. He never acknowledged us, but walked away, leaving the passport laying on the desk. Andrew was an arms reach away and half joking said, 'should I just grab it?' So from there we (and 3 other families who aren't with Lifeline, but are using the same lawyer) were shuffled inside a small office. All the passports were tossed on a counter and we were told to go sit back outside. So outside we went, to the same place we started, except now we were told to sit. We all squished on a metal bench and every couple of minutes scooted closer to the front. Once at the front we were told we weren't supposed to be there and to go back inside...where we had come from. You can imagine our frustration by this point. We all walked back inside only to be told to go back outside and take a seat! (Not kidding) Our worker told us all just to stay, so that's what we did. We stood there and waited. Our name was called first and the guy looking through our file was very insistent that we had to have the written ruling. We knew they preferred to have this, but were told we would be able to get it anyway. All 4 families were without a written ruling, and we all walked away without a passport. We watched them take our passport and put it back in a box. I wish I had a picture of the tables with long skinny boxes filled with hundreds and hundreds of passports. At this time we went back outside, under the tent where we first started. Several different workers tried talking to different people without success. We left the passport office to go to our lawyers office to see what he could do to help. Honestly, talking with him made the entire process seem less likely to happen today and Andrew and I left disappointed and very frustrated. We learned that our judge would not be available all next week which meant no written ruling, which meant no passport. We ate a quick lunch across the street, then headed back to the passport office for a second attempt. This is when I got on Facebook and asked you all to start praying...it was 2:30 here so 7:30 a.m. at home. We needed Kentucky to wake up and start praying for us! We waited only 30 or so minutes before they called us (all families) to go inside. We stood inside and again we were the first family to be called up. This time there was a lady behind the counter who restated that we were supposed to have the written ruling before getting the passport. She was friendly though, and talked with us about the states she had visited in the U.S. She had Andrew sign a large book and handed us the passport! I felt like we should take off running before they change their mind! We headed to IOM to see if we could schedule an appointment, but they had already closed for the day. We are ecstatic though...we took a giant step forward today! Monday we will head to IOM for a medical appointment and go from there! Thank you for all your prayers and encouraging words!<br />

Yesterday was a typical day around here. It rained in the morning, then breakfast & school. Around 4:30 we headed up to the International School. Andrew has played basketball there a few times and has went golfing with the school's basketball coach. It's close to Quality, so we rode bodas there. Since we are mzungos they assume we are with the school and we can walk right in. The school is beautiful. They have a huge pool that has a large 3 foot kid pool, which the kids got to swim in for about 20 minutes before they closed. After, we watched Andrew play basketball and then walked on up the hill to the children's learning center where there were several different play areas. The kids had a blast and it was nice to be up on this huge hill, overlooking the city, away from all the smog. (Fresh Kentucky air would be #6 on things that I miss.)</div>

After playing we walked to Quality to buy groceries. One of the girls that plays basketball enjoys cooking and coming over Friday to cook authentic African food for the families here. When we sat down, they all turned and just starred at us. We tried singing 'Twinkle Twinkle' but that just made the littler ones cry. Since not much activity was happening inside, we headed outside with our crew to play... shortly after a few other kids followed. </div>

The kids eventually warmed up and began running around and talking to "Danny". I turned around and saw Andrew handing his rubber band bracelet Chapel had made him to a little boy, Ezekial. There's always one that pulls on your heartstrings and it was evident to me why Ezekial pulled on Andrews. Ezekial has some kind of disability, not sure what, but he's unable to walk independently. He was as happy as could be and seemed to enjoy the extra attention Andrew was giving him.</div>

Tomorrow could be a big day for us! We heard on Wednesday that our passport is ready! Since today was a holiday everything was closed. The plan is to go tomorrow morning to the passport office. We do not have our written ruling, so we have been told it will be difficult to get it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Please pray that it goes as smoothly and quickly as possible. It would be GREAT if we found out our written ruling was ready tomorrow morning, which would make getting the passport much easier. </div>

This is the family that invited us to their home for dinner, who are from Canada. While we were eating dinner they began talking about a little girl who Savannah (their 16 year old daughter) has been working with at this orphanage. She has CP and Savannah wasn't sure what she could be doing to help her. I was very excited to offer to help and even go with them the next time they volunteered. So before we left, we planned to go with them today at 8:30. Chapel and I woke up a little earlier than normal to get ready and have enough time for breakfast. I thought about it all night last night, and couldn't wait to get to meet her. At 8:00 they called and said their car wasn't starting and they weren't coming. This is upsetting for a couple of reasons... 1 - I was very excited about loving on a little girl who needed some extra attention and love. 2 - That was my activity for the day...that was our way of passing the day and now we are up earlier than usual with nothing to do. 3 - I had already showered, so exercising was now not an option. We headed on to breakfast and at 8:45 they called and said they were on there way! So our plans changed again and Chapel and I left at 9:00. <br />
<br />
Sanyu Baby Home is the oldest orphanage in Kampala. It's hard to but into words what it's like...concrete floors with paint chipping walls. Rows of iron cribs and rooms with a few old, dirty toys. There were a lot of children and not enough 'aunties' to care for them. When we got there a Physio Therapist was working with the little girl, Hannah. I talked with him a little and watched him work with her. He would leave to go get another child and I would play with Hannah. My heart just melted for her. I kept thinking about if Trust was in that environment and how different he would be without all the therapy and attention and love he receives. After 3 hours, he was finished working with her and it was time for lunch. I carried her to where all the kids were lined up to eat and was instructed to sit her on a wooden bench. The next thing I knew I was handed a bowl of food with a spoon to feed her with.<br />

</tbody></table>
After lunch it was nap time, so we left about 12:30. Tanya and Savannah were very open to my thoughts and ideas. I shared a few simple things that I would want done as a parent of a child with disabilities. Simply talking to her and telling her what you're going to be doing. No, she may not understand, but she might. She probably does understand more that everyone thinks she does. I also suggested just turning her stander to face the door where people move in and out instead of starring at a wall. Simple. That part of today was great. I was in my 'element', loving on a little girl who was a lot like Trust. I hope to be able to go back and show Savannah exercises and stretches she can do with Hannah on days that the Physio Therapist isn't there.<br />
<br />
The other part of the day was not as fun...we talked with Linda and things seem to be moving extra slow. We have no passport. All 3 of us families are all waiting extra long for different things. When we were talking to her I just felt like we need to prepare mentally that we are going to be here for at least 5 more weeks. We kinda got our hopes up that once we got the passport we would be home in 1-2 weeks. <br />
<br />
For dinner we walked up the dirt hill to this guy who makes rolex (chapti, eggs and tomato). It's better than it sounds and it's a cheap dinner. 3 of them will feed our family and is 4500 shillings, which is under $2!! If we want to splurge we buy just plain chapatis for 500 shillings each and put a chocolate spread and powdered sugar on them....tastes like heaven. :)<br />

1. Family & friends, but specifically, Trust. I can't even describe how much I miss him! My arms feel empty without having him to hold. Our friends and family have been great about being available for FaceTime and sending us pictures of him, but so much of our interaction with Trust is holding him, kissing him, squeezing him. I miss the ease of talking with everyone, running into them at Kroger or Mi Casita, and walking to friend's houses for dinner. I miss having our friends & family stop in unannounced at our house and worshiping at church together. </div>

3. My car. If you have a car you are not trapped in one place. You are free to leave at anytime. Having a car means you can drive to the grocery the second you want. No calling to find a driver and no waiting for them to arrive at 9 and not show up until after 11! In my car I drive an hour to and from work. That's my quiet time. That's my Pandora worship time.<br />
<br />
4. My photography business. I have only been on this adventure for 1 year and it's something I absolutely love! I miss holding sweet new babies, only a few days old. I miss being in a hot room trying to get them to sleep for hours at a time and creating beautiful images their parents will treasure forever. I miss buying new props and blankets (this is probably a good thing). I miss seeing clients happy faces when they receive their prints. I can't wait to get back and start back up!<br />
<br />
5. Fall! I'm missing, literally missing fall. I missed the festivals and am missing the cooler weather, the pumpkins, the pumpkin spice frappuccinos, candy corn, Evan's Orchard, pumpkin picking, hot apple cider, leaves changing, smell of camp fires, my mom's chili, crock pot soups, sweaters and jackets and scarves. Fall means they are starting to put out Christmas decorations in stores. Fall is my favorite time of the year. <br />
<br />
As I write this, I am reminding myself to enjoy our time here. The song "You're gonna miss this, you're gonna want this back, you're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast..." keeps popping into my head. While I am sure there is some truth that, I am also sure we aren't going to wish it had taken any longer. I am sure we will look back and miss the time we had that was completely set aside to bond with Jude. I am trying to remember not to wish it away, but to enjoy the days we have here. Easier said than done when your family isn't together, but trying to make great memories while we are here. We have met a lot of new people and started building relationships with people outside of The Lodge. We were invited to go to church by Martin, the friend of a friend of someone Andrew knows, who took us to see animals. He also took the Newsome family on a weekend safari, so we have seen him several times since he took us. He picked us all up a little before 8:00. He was hoping to have a van, so all 10 of us could comfortably fit, but it didn't happen. Instead of him making 2 trips to take us all, the kids just hopped in the back of the car and the rest of us squeezed in. <br />

We arrived at his church, Yesu Akwagala (Jesus loves you), a little after 8:00. As first time visitors, we were invited in front of the congregation to introduce ourselves. Thankfully, I'm married to a Pastor who doesn't mind being in front of large crowds, so he spoke on behalf of our family.<br />
<br />
Church was over about 10:40 and Martin took us all to his home where his wife had made us lunch. She had cooked a pumpkin that had vegetables and pork in the middle. She wrapped it in banana leaves and steamed it over a fire. We were told this type of dish is only made for people who are loved...that it is a very special meal. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_dfy8tTwwbZ_FTmKxoU8_zIphbeqllUe5YWLnPbRza5yDBlNzEAnfKmkZrA8I3iZadoBoHPz-ySKOPTALWUJv5jfR2pliKL4wnB554jZTwHKtkntgDpXZclhXBvl1qgLqdWLrC4aEEmJH/s1600/20141005_123531.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_dfy8tTwwbZ_FTmKxoU8_zIphbeqllUe5YWLnPbRza5yDBlNzEAnfKmkZrA8I3iZadoBoHPz-ySKOPTALWUJv5jfR2pliKL4wnB554jZTwHKtkntgDpXZclhXBvl1qgLqdWLrC4aEEmJH/s1600/20141005_123531.jpg" height="640" width="360" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We also had rice and potatoes and several other African dishes. It was great to meet Martin's family and we felt blessed to have a meal cooked for us! Our time at Martin's house was short because Andrew had met the basketball coach at the International School and was meeting him at 1:00 to play golf. So Martin took us all back 'home' and Andrew left to play golf. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We were also invited to eat dinner at another families house tonight! Our second day here, we were walking back from the orphanage and we saw another mzungo that Andrew began talking to. His family had moved here several years ago from Canada and make micro-nutrients. Later that week we were eating dinner at a restaurant and we ran into his older son (he's the one who told us about the pool at Lindsay Cottages). Then, last week when we were walking back from Quality we ran into him again and he invited us for dinner. They have several older children who are in the states, a 16 year old daughter and a 9 year old son that are here. Chapel had a blast playing with their son and their 3 puppies! Jude Daniel's reaction to the puppies is similar to that of seeing the butterfly. He's scared to death! Crying, screaming, running, flapping his hands....coming home to our dog should be interesting. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Chapel strikes up conversations with everyone and becomes best friends with everyone she meets, adults and children. It's so fun to watch her in all these new situations and meeting new people. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When we got 'home' Eric and Josh were already set up watching football...Andrew was happy to join.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The basketball coach of the International School has invited us to swim there, so we will probably take him up on his offer one day this week. Other than that we have no plans...still waiting to get Jude's passport before we can move onto the next step. </div>

Cara and Chapel have made a list of daily activities for the snails which include exercise and cleaning their shells. There are very tiny ones and ones that are pretty big. The girls have named them and on the larger ones, have wrote their name on their shell. <br />

Earlier this week we went into a book store at Quality. They were selling DVD's for less than $2.00. At that time Dolphin Tale 2 hadn't come out in the theater here, so Chapel was super excited to see it for sale. We bought it and weren't surprised when Chinese subtitles popped up, covering half of the screen. :) Chapel loved it anyway! <br />

Not much has taken place this week...so little that I was certain
today was Wednesday. When your days are pretty much the same, they all
kinda run together. I was really hoping we would have Jude's passport
by the end of this week, so I was disappointed today was already
Thursday.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
This
week we have been hanging out close to The Lodge. We haven't had a
reason to go into town, so we pass the time by eating a late breakfast,
school, planning what we will eat for lunch (which sometimes will
require a short walk to a local bakery for bread so we can have
sandwiches), naps, and figuring out dinner.<br />
<br />
Monday, Andrew recorded a
message for church. No tripod made for an interesting setup. Here's a
behind the scenes shot.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVFRRcKhbyvYHcE9kdZEvSluXs98npD5irhoR2SXHfDIZH-vek5V2nNl7iTjg2m22EcO8eR3GSO926ymes206p-mpy6hLgHiaLXUVoeL6cjjTrqV_3khZ1s8U-7DZPYgcIMuMyPT0_pQ7V/s1600/20140929_151008.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVFRRcKhbyvYHcE9kdZEvSluXs98npD5irhoR2SXHfDIZH-vek5V2nNl7iTjg2m22EcO8eR3GSO926ymes206p-mpy6hLgHiaLXUVoeL6cjjTrqV_3khZ1s8U-7DZPYgcIMuMyPT0_pQ7V/s1600/20140929_151008.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
Twice this week we have had a
snack or small lunch, then rode bodas to Quality to eat an early
dinner/late lunch. After eating, on Tuesday, we walked to a basketball court that
Andrew had spotted earlier in the week. There was a slide and some
swings next to it, so Chapel and Andrew shot some hoops while Jude and I

Today was our 2nd trip to Quality. We had
lunch, then passed the time by walking aisle by aisle through the
supermarket...trying to come up with lunch or dinner ideas. After, we
sat outside an enjoyed some drinks and chocolate.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's the entrance to the restrooms at Quality. What you can't see in this image, are the lights moving to show the boy pottying. :)</div>

Tomorrow we are going into town to buy more beads at the local market. Thanks to all of you who have purchased necklaces to help buy Jude's plane ticket HOME! If you would like to purchase some for yourself or gifts you can <a href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.874864482526499.1073741833.671928399486776&type=1" target="_blank">here</a>. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Please continue to pray for our process. We could still hear something tomorrow about Jude's passport and since we are already planning on going into town it would be very convenient to go then! </div>

We share our living room/kitchen area with them (family of 6), so our weekend has been a little quieter that usual. We started our morning with breakfast, then school work. We've had some great meals, but nothing like 'home', so I made my mom's chicken salad for lunch...it suprisingly tasted just like what I make at home, except we ate it with chapat's. <br />
<br />

While Jude Daniel was napping Chapel and I put a 300 piece 'Frozen' puzzle together. The rest of the day was spent trying to pass the time.<br />

Today we rode boda bodas to Watoto church. We enjoyed a great, lively service, then walked to a restaurant to have lunch. We were negotiating price with the boda boda drivers to take us back to The Lodge and a mzungo lady pulled up in her car with her 2 Ugandan children. She began to scold the boda boda drivers for charging us to much. She told us we shouldn't pay what they were wanting and said she would be happy to drive us 'home'. In the grand scheme of things, we are talking what would be equivalent to about $1 more, but, I will take a free car ride any day instead of a boda boda. She was a pastors wife of another local church, originally from Italy and had moved permanently to Uganda 8 years ago. <br />
<br />
Once 'home' we napped, made Grandbobbie's dressed eggs for dinner (another craving of home) and that's about it. <br />

Not a very adventurous weekend. Now, the kids are asleep next to me in the bed, Andrew's watching football and I'm enjoyed my fall 'Apple Pumpkin' candle.... <br />

...similar to home except we don't have Trust and we are laying under a mosquito net. We went last Friday, but the Newsome family wasn't able to go. I didn't take my camera the first time and really regretted it. The amount of paper beads lined up is impressive and beautiful. <br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We walked throughout the market, adding to what we had already bought the previous week, more beads, a few decorations for Jude Daniel's room and gifts for friends and family. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYI1oEh7jnVGzHeDLq0VIhJbzM8ry-FqQkQhel-3QaB0rpmfr254muDqndYhjm6ZHHljuAr2La3mvBYde8IyDuOHq5HGZ_EOUYblznqIaHY3qXfP1d1lXBeNTtdIOQQvAff1XRUeXyE_cb/s1600/F87A7274.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYI1oEh7jnVGzHeDLq0VIhJbzM8ry-FqQkQhel-3QaB0rpmfr254muDqndYhjm6ZHHljuAr2La3mvBYde8IyDuOHq5HGZ_EOUYblznqIaHY3qXfP1d1lXBeNTtdIOQQvAff1XRUeXyE_cb/s1600/F87A7274.jpg" height="212" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This lady was outside the second market we went to. She was sewing little purses and baskets. She wanted 4,00 shillings, which is less than $2. As we started to walk into the market she quickly came down to 3,000. So little money for such a lot of time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After market shopping, we headed to Acasia mall to have lunch. It took extremely long to go a short distance because of traffic, but Chapel and Cara entertained themselves by playing with their new stuffed animals. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After lunch, we paid 6,000 to let the kids play in the mall play area. The Acasia mall is brand new, so this play area seemed like Disney World compared to the last one. Trampolines, slides, inflatables, swings....they had a blast.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihxj0imfKddfweREXfQNTyUjxhTWgAgwHXgEFIlSlT7pwiXSbRFHi4HPTMK7WR9T7Gu9RADv4CEtMX-veGno3xphH4-rphl7VPgaBPyhgx8cpEMUBuzEQSkPAl2u_mXnCo7x_fWBfl-_yZ/s1600/F87A7286.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihxj0imfKddfweREXfQNTyUjxhTWgAgwHXgEFIlSlT7pwiXSbRFHi4HPTMK7WR9T7Gu9RADv4CEtMX-veGno3xphH4-rphl7VPgaBPyhgx8cpEMUBuzEQSkPAl2u_mXnCo7x_fWBfl-_yZ/s1600/F87A7286.jpg" height="213" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Last stop on the way home was Quality Supermarket. We ran into a mzungo family who knew us from pictures our safari guide, Martin, had shown them on his ipad from our safari. They had been talking to him about going on a safari as well. They had adopted from Uganda about 4 years ago, and had just gotten here to adopt another child. I noticed they had Ritz crackers in their basket, which I had tried to find at our last Quality visit. They informed us the store had just gotten them and they go fast. So we left Quality with Ritz crackers, Oreos, Doritos and some ingredients to try to make chicken salad. :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Jude Daniel had a great day. I guess you could say he is potty trained...as long as we remember to take him, he goes in the potty. We haven't had any accidents in a week, so that's nice! We are working on him telling us when he has to go. He's a great traveler...granted he can just stretch out and sleep on our lap while we are sitting in traffic for 2 hours. He is saying a lot more words that we can actually understand. He's also getting better about trying to communicate what he wants before bursting into tears, but we still have several melt downs a day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We are anxious to get home. It's hard to believe we haven't held our Trust in over 3 weeks! :( I know he is getting extra attention from his teachers and therapists at school and from our friends and family at church and we greatly appreciate that! Anyone at anytime, feel free to send us pictures of him (and you) through iMessage or Facebook. It helps us feel a little more connected! </div>

Once in town, things weren't quite ready so we stopped in a few sports stores looking for an authentic Ugandan soccer jersey for Jude Daniel. Eric and Misty and their kids rode into town with us to meet a lady to make them some clothes, so next we headed to find her shop in a 'mall'. It was the most confusing 'mall' with halls and stairs going in different directions. No one knew which way shop #153 was....it was like we were on an episode of 'The Amazing Race'! Once we found her, she lead us downtown Kampala to a fabric store. This walk was INTENSE! Very crowed...4 white adults with 6 kids all trying to follow 1 person down narrow sidewalks and crossing streets. Let me remind you there are no stop lights or stop signs or any rules when it comes to driving, so you basically step out in front of boda bodas and van taxis and just hope they see you and then decide to stop! We had to walk in between van taxis that were so close together I couldn't hold Jude on my hip...I had to turn side ways, holding him out to the side. To make it more interesting, Andrew had a backpack on with our passports and money in it, so I was the caboose...trying to stay close and keep an eye on his bag. Sure enough a guy slipped in between me and Andrew and unzipped a pocket of his bag! I was shoulder to shoulder with this other guy, not far and yelled, "HEY!" He casually walked away while Andrew gave him the evil eye! No one did anything..the boda boda drivers just watched and laughed. The fabric store was just as interesting...narrow halls with small rooms of fabric.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Chapel picked out a fabric and we are going to have an authentic African dress made, called a gomesi. After our downtown adventure we headed to the passport office. 'Office' is used lightly. It is a parking lot with several tents and sections of benches. We moved from one section of benches to the next, then finally to a desk where our file was looked at. We were told we were missing a document, but we were still able to apply today! Thankfully, this morning felt like a fall day in Kentucky and we were only there about 45 minutes. The next stop was lunch and then to a play area in a mall. The play area was 2000 shillings, which is less than $1. It included a 'carousel' ride...they plugged it in and let them go and go and go. Eventually Misty just pulled the plug and they headed to play on the less than safe and sanitary McDonald's like play area. The seat belt type net tubes (not sure if that makes sense) had clearly been broke and tied back, but with larger holes...so large that when Jude was scooting on his bottom, he ended up falling through and was holding on my his feet and hands. Chapel was not far away and lifted him out...just adds to the adventure! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now we just wait to receive our passport...then we will be able to take our next step. </div>

We had thought we were going into town sometime late morning afternoon so after breakfast we got ready and waited. Not much happens around here, so when we think we are going into town we plan our day around that and look forward to getting out. When it doesn't happen it makes for a long, uneventful day. We received texts throughout the morning that the electric was out in the city so therefore they couldn't send the payments they needed to before our appointment. :(<br />
<br />
So the majority of our day was spent with me editing pictures and Andrew playing Clash of the Clans. He did take a break from his game to teach the other families 'Euker'. We had PB&J for lunch and made noodles with tomato sauce for dinner. That was basically our day!<br />
<br />
We will try to apply for the passport again tomorrow. Andrew & Brittaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11915159356671835133noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3170896198469455861.post-31009128112478174832014-09-21T23:30:00.000-07:002014-09-21T23:30:49.491-07:00Next Step, Passport!We have our order! Friday we found out we had received our order, unfortunately it was to late in the day to do anything about it. So our next step is to apply for Jude's passport. We are supposed to go into town tomorrow morning to do this. It took the family ahead of us just under 2 weeks to receive theirs...please pray the same (or less!) for us. <br />
<br />
Yesterday, we had the opportunity to go see some animals. We had to drive about 6 hours to Murchison Falls, but it was worth it. We had to keep reminding Chapel (and ourselves) that we were not in a zoo....that we were seeing wild animals!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwTF2KdiB8EpPigBUy3W7h2KZnuJScbreGwGsLhMJvSyfGlGoRsHv7gEEf0GRe_nCR0RicYZ4KuZ3s7y9ADt_bRoxxdgy59UAtgjusGCIUTHceJ7MFY2rNes0Lre7ntuo2JPBt-NxxZde1/s1600/F87A7065.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwTF2KdiB8EpPigBUy3W7h2KZnuJScbreGwGsLhMJvSyfGlGoRsHv7gEEf0GRe_nCR0RicYZ4KuZ3s7y9ADt_bRoxxdgy59UAtgjusGCIUTHceJ7MFY2rNes0Lre7ntuo2JPBt-NxxZde1/s1600/F87A7065.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
When we arrived we ate lunch at an outdoor restaurant where there were 3
warthogs hanging out. We could have touched them, but were advised they
can not be friendly...which then was kinda scary because we were so
close! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnKWE3_N3T5JQexiY574Db88Bs7AdX9WmUDjn_PqTbTNNOWgO9cVO7-nSJI2dciiNCm24VAZKbNnwLWvLfzY3TGZK2PtjJ-hf865La2S9EIydymXvlzFIG2TPv7M6K0K2q2NfPIxHX5v4P/s1600/F87A6928.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnKWE3_N3T5JQexiY574Db88Bs7AdX9WmUDjn_PqTbTNNOWgO9cVO7-nSJI2dciiNCm24VAZKbNnwLWvLfzY3TGZK2PtjJ-hf865La2S9EIydymXvlzFIG2TPv7M6K0K2q2NfPIxHX5v4P/s1600/F87A6928.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />We then took a ferry across the Nile River to get to the other side of the park. Chapel thought this was great, because all the cars drive on it to be taken across. <br />
<br />
We rode on top of the vehicle which was a lot of fun. Once, when trying to track a lion, they took us off of the dirt road where we hit a large, covered hole. I flew forward and fell into the opening on the car seats below...with Jude Daniel in my lap! Neither of us were hurt and we all got a good laugh because it happened so suddenly. :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBMBLy3GU_r5QBloknKka15EEQbnlVtL_17jnZmT5Wu-HIQMoxOTag4hk1XU1RtL_aDy2AcTxRxU2FSNuwRFgd5DRNYRUkeE7jkQ74iyTLXECsrVBFrw0aEbp_RxtqMqUWGesCP9OkzU_C/s1600/F87A6961.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBMBLy3GU_r5QBloknKka15EEQbnlVtL_17jnZmT5Wu-HIQMoxOTag4hk1XU1RtL_aDy2AcTxRxU2FSNuwRFgd5DRNYRUkeE7jkQ74iyTLXECsrVBFrw0aEbp_RxtqMqUWGesCP9OkzU_C/s1600/F87A6961.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
We looked for animals from 2:00-6:20. We saw many 'antelope' type things...there were several different kinds, all with different names. We also saw elephants, baboons and giraffes! We looked for lions, but never spotted any. They tried so hard to find us a lion that we ended up pushing our time to make it back to the last ferry, so our ride back was very fast and bumpy...so much that Jude and I opted to sit inside the jeep for fear of being popped off..Andrew and Chapel followed a few mintues later. Thankfully, the ferry was running a few minutes behind so we made it.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: black;"><a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">We came back and had dinner at the same restaurant. Instead of warthogs, there were now hippos! I don't think I have ever seen a hippo that was not covered in water up to its nose. They are crazy huge, and we were so close we could have touched it, but were told to stay away. We stayed the night in a very small concrete building. It had 1 small fan that was solar powered, so it quit about midnight, which made it very hot...plus there were only 2 twin beds for all of us to share. About 10 minutes after we turned out the lights to go to sleep I heard something outside eating. I looked our our "window" (a large hole with a screen and curtain over it) to find a hippo outside our room. If the screen not been there I could have touched it! It made me a little nervous, because it could just as easily pop its head right through the screen! I watched it leave around the corner, only to hear it a few minutes later on the other side of our room. So crazy! <br /><br /> Before heading back to The Lodge we stopped at the falls which were beautiful! We had a great time with our family...definitely a once in a lifetime experience that we will always remember!</a></span></div>

<br />
Earlier this week we had planned to go to the pool today. We have to kinda plan these things, only because it gives us something to look forward to. After breakfast us and the 2 other families began the walk to Lindsay Cottages. Chapel had a much more enjoyable time this time because she had friends to swim and play with. Jude Daniel started right where he left off. He now 'steps' off into the water without having to hold onto our hands. He even lets go of Andrew to go under the water. <br />
<br />
After our swim we kept walking to a pizza restaurant, Cafe Roma. We picked up extra passport pictures of Jude at the 'Studio', looked for UNO cards at Quality Supermarket with no luck, then rode bodas home. It rained after we got back. When it rains, the electric goes out. Eventually, they turn on a generator, but for a little while we were without electricity. <br />
<br />
Chapel had a crochet lesson from Miss Marrisa, we played a game of UNO (with the other families cards), we sang 'Happy Birthday' to Uriah (Marrisa's son) and turned in for an early bedtime.<br />
<br />
We have no plans tomorrow...maybe we will have to go into town to apply for a passport. Fingers crossed! <br />

<br />
Last night we went to a new mall in town. It was very nice and we enjoyed walking around with the other families. We ate dinner at the food court in the mall. It is set up just like one in the U.S., but after you order you sit down and they bring you the food out like you were at a restaurant. You don't pay until after you are finished eating. It was nice to get out and do something different.<br />
<br />
We are trying to teach Jude Daniel to ask us for things. If he wants more to eat or needs help doing something he just breaks down at a level 10 cry. He has started bringing us bottles of water and will say, "Open it." He hasn't cried as much when he has had to put a toy down. It's been a learning process, but I think we are all figuring each other out.<br />
<br />
Last night, Linda said that Jude fit well with our family...that Chapel was strong and 'thick' like Jude. Jude's tribe is called M. She said Chapel was a Mzungo (White) Muchiga. Other than him physical fitting into our family, his personality fits perfectly too! We are so thankful God chose him for us!<br />
<br />

He's already a different boy! I wish I could show him off to you, but we still haven't heard anything about guardianship. Linda, who works for our lawyer, was supposed to let us know when she heard something about our ruling. We never heard from her today, so hopefully tomorrow we will hear and maybe can apply for Jude's passport by Wednesday. <br />

</tbody></table>
It's taken us about 2 weeks to figure out local places to eat, how much it should cost to take a boda places (they like to charge us 'mzungus' more), that our room does have hot water (yay!) you just have to flip a light switch to turn it on 30 minutes before you shower. In 2 weeks we've learned that the 'jam' (traffic) in town is always bad, how to warm up pizza in skillet, and discovered something similar to Nutella that makes the perfect dessert!<br />
<br />
Today we had nothing on the agenda. Chapel is constantly playing outside with Micah, Anna and Kara. Jude and Judah joined in the fun today when Misty broke out the bubbles. The boys had a lot of fun, running, smiling and screaming. They are interacting and talking to each other in Lugandan. Judah was even yelling for Jude saying, "Danny!"<br />
<br />
Tonight, is Africa documentary movie night. Chapel loves them! Jude Daniel is more concerned about climbing up and down Andrew.<br />

To celebrate, 13 of us loaded up in a van and headed to the Entebbe Zoo. It was probably the hottest day that we have had since we have been here, but we enjoyed it. Chapel's favorite animal was the Shoebill....she and Andrew have been watching Africa documentaries at night and the Shoebill was one of the animals it talked about.<br />

I didn't feel well for the majority of the day, so our evening consisted of me laying in the room while Chapel and Andrew skyped friends and family to wish Chapel a happy birthday. I held off on making anything with my cake mix because Misty knew a lady who lives here who has an oven. So yesterday, September 13, we walked to the gas station to buy oil and eggs. The eggs aren't refrigerated, they just sit out in crates to buy as needed, so I only bought the 3 the recipe called for. We headed down the road and summoned a boda-boda to ride several miles to the house. I'm sure we were a sight...2 white women squished on a boda-boda, me holding a bag with 3 eggs ever so carefully! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We went back to the ladie's house today for lunch...here is where I baked the cake. We forgot to bring a bottle of water, so we scooped water out of the white bucket with the yellow lid which has freshly boiled water in it. The last hurdle was converting the oven from Celsius to Fahrenheit, which ended up being simple thanks to the internet. A couple of hours later we were given a ride back to our 'home' in a vehicle....carrying a pan on a boda may have been a bit of a challenge.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So...here is the cake! It's probably the least fancy or expensive one we've had, but it was made with much time, love and energy! </div>

Tomorrow, Andrew will be going into Kampala to pick up a form we need at the U.S. Embassy. We have had this appointment scheduled for several days and it will hopefully be fairly quick. We also will hear about the judge's ruling tomorrow regarding legal guardianship. From that we should be able to apply for Jude's passport. The family that was here before us received their passport a week and a half after applying. While at the passport office they were with other adoptive families who had been waiting for their passport for 6 weeks. Continue to pray for a fast process! We are really missing our Trust! </div>

Not today! He even had food left on his plate that he didn't eat. He also took drinks of his juice whenever he wanted without us having to cue him to "take a drink." <br />
<br />
We have seen a lot of smiles and as Chapel says, "He's really breakin' his shell!" He's a happy boy unless we take something out of his hands, which results in huge alligator tears and loud crying (this happened twice while in the supermarket today). He now moves around when we are eating at a restaurant, drops things on the floor, reaches and grabs for things off the table...the first week he sat like a statue! We are glad we are seeing some more typical 2 behavior! <br />
<br />
Chapel is having a blast playing with Cara and Micah (Misty and Eric's kids). They have created a secret club with secret places and secret codes. The other kids, our Jude and Judah (Misty and Eric's adopted son) held hands and were walked around by their other daughter, Anna. <br />

We played here until about 2:30 p.m. before heading closer to town to look at other places we could stay at for less. We ate dinner and made it home at 10:00 p.m. Anytime we go into town it makes for a long day, guaranteeing we will sit in traffic, in a hot van for several hours. :(<br />
<br />
<br />
Today, we walked 2 miles (down the same road we go to the pool) to a clinic to get Jude tested for parasites. <br />
<br />
On our way we saw cows.... <br />

We continued up the road to Quality Supermarket where we ate lunch, took Passport photos and bought flour, vanilla extract and sugar. I had hoped to make Chapel a birthday cake tomorrow. I brought the cake mix and icing from home...but The Lodge's oven is broke. So, thanks to Pinterest, I found a no bake truffle recipe I'm going to try.
